Synchronize Your Present and Future Self

After reading an inspiring book or watching a motivational video, I immediately feel excited to implement what I’ve learned. For example, I may have seen an instructive clip on an exercise movement. And during the moment, I’m extremely energized and eager to try it in my next workout.

But as the gap between that initial exhilaration and my training lengthens, the less likely I will apply the newly gained knowledge. Reasons may include feeling tired after a long workday and choosing not to exercise.

Knowing my future self won’t show the same level of determination and focus that my past self did when I watched the video, I set up my environment to increase the probability of doing the necessary work.

In the case of promoting fitness, I put my yoga mat in the center of my room. That way, I lower the barrier of getting started. And in the rare times of immense struggle, I simply begin with a warm-up exercise which can be as easy as doing one neck-roll.

After I have overcome the primary hurdle, my body is inclined to continue.

Acquiring the initial momentum enables me to do other empowering activities during the day such as the following:

  • Eat healthy foods to refuel my body
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Perform yoga stretches
  • Meditate to calm my mind

By acting on my values and doing what needs to be done, I align my present and future self.

Start Atomically Small

By breaking down daunting goals into small and digestible sizes, you can make them vastly manageable. A powerful question you can ask yourself is this:

“Can I just do one [blank]?”

  • For exercise, it can be “Can I just do one push-up?
  • As for writing, ask yourself “Can I just write one sentence?”
  • And to calm your mind, “Can I just meditate for one minute?

The purpose is to make the task so easy that you can’t refuse. This propels you to begin the process. And once you move past the initial resistance, you’re more likely to continue.

After you overcome the first hurdle, you’ll create momentum to keep going.

That’s because the most difficult part is getting started.

It’s similar to the law of inertia in physics. Something that stays at rest will want to remain still. And the opposite is true for that which is in motion and wants to keep moving.

Progressing with positive outcomes, you can move on to bigger assignments.

This cascade effect can transform tiny wins into huge victories over time through consistent commitment toward excellence.
