“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”
― Maya Angelou
Embrace The Waves
On my recent trip to the big island of Hawaii, I sat on the beach and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.
Time slows down as I am fully present, feeling the sun rays striking my body and the light breeze brushing my hair. In the background was the cloudless blue sky, and in the foreground was the gigantic Pacific Ocean.
Gazing into the horizon, I watched the interaction between sea and land.
With the wind’s aid, the gushing water waves collided with the nearby boulders.
Although some small and loose rocks were moved in the interaction, the ones that didn’t budge were firmly sat on the ground.
These immovable objects had textures and erosions that could only have been formed through enduring numerous decades of clashing with the relentless waves. These battle scars were a result of persistence and staying the course despite nature’s powerful forces. And after reaching their maximum distance ashore, the surf steadily retreated back into the ocean.
Seeing this natural bond, I was reminded of my past struggles and the key decisions I made for a lasting change. They were all monumental in shaping me into the man I am today. Those pivotal moments included the following:
- Health transformation journey and making it a permanent lifestyle
- Improving myself, and as a byproduct, be better with the world, including women
- Starting a venture and sharing my gift with the world
And having gone through those experiences, I learned the following:
- It is okay not to have all the answers
- “Rejection” is simply a filtering process
- Unwavering commitment without attachment to any outcome
- State my truth while being considerate of others
- Enjoy the process by having fun by doing what makes me come alive and spending time with people I care about and vice versa
- Build meaningful relationships and consistently add value to them out of generosity, mutual appreciation, and reciprocation
Just like the ocean waves to the rocks, life’s challenges will continuously arise. And only by overcoming them can I continue to grow and expand my collection of wisdom.
There Is No Easy Path
Having survived for millions of years, humans have been hardwired to choose comfort and the path of least resistance.
Therefore, it is not difficult to do the bare minimum and simply exist.
However, in order to achieve anything great and meaningful, dedicated work is mandatory. In addition to attaining your desires, consistent efforts also act as a rite of passage for appreciation.
It is life’s way of making you earn your desires.
Examples include the following:
- To maintain a fit body, you must eat healthily and exercise on a regular basis.
- For a flourishing business/job, you have to continuously produce high-quality work.
- To have a thriving romantic relationship, you must consistently date your partner with frequent activities.
- For platonic relationships, you can regularly spend quality time with family and friends.
Through dedication, you get rewarded with progress and results, which can vary with time depending on your level of commitment and effort.
Increase Your Adversity Quotient
Life can be simple, if we fully embrace the inevitable obstacles that it throws at us.
They serve the purpose of molding us into the man we must become. And to grow stronger, we must overcome those daily challenges with continuous triumphs.
By tackling these hurdles head-on, you evolve. The rewards are those internal qualities and honorable characteristics. And by adopting the growth mindset through viewing hardships as opportunities and conquering them, you increase your adversity quotient – the ability to deal with difficulties.
Additionally, you gain confidence knowing you can handle any challenges that may arise because of your previous experience of overcoming barriers.
This allows you to remain calm despite uncertainty.
Thinking with a clear head, you create an action plan for tackling any hindrance that may arise.
Accepting the endless waves of obstacles and moving through them with thoughtful action, you evolve and become more impervious to life’s external impediments.
Closing Thoughts
The wisest, mentally toughest, and most courageous people are those who have gone through some of life’s utmost challenges.
Those struggling life experiences provide them with insights, perseverance, and self-trust.
These individuals have a distinct sparkle in their eyes.
And when faced with life’s endless obstacles, they are not deterred, because of their past of having overcome many. Additionally, they put their challenges in perspective.
Because in the grand scheme of life, this is another hurdle for them to conquer which is part of the molding process. Therefore in the midst of adversity, they welcome it with open arms knowing they will become stronger by overcoming it.
By living this way, they stay grounded regardless of the height and strength the waves charge at them.
Eventually, everything subsides, and they yet stand tall and poised.
