Discover Your Motivation to Start
Shortly after I started my professional career, I focused most of my time on building my career. As a result, there was less time for activities outside of work.
Combined with unhealthy eating and lack of exercise, I had gained many pounds of fat.
And one night, disgusted with what I saw in the bathroom mirror, I angrily slammed the bathroom sink and said “Enough is enough!”
I made a commitment to myself that I would start living healthy and I no longer wanted to look like that ever again.
Ever since I made that decision, my life transformed as I made health my highest value.
With that inner compass, I would prioritize my health – eating healthily, exercising regularly, getting sufficient quality sleep, and obtaining necessary recovery.
And after that change in lifestyle, now my body doesn’t feel right when I don’t exercise or eat healthily frequently.
Since life is also meant for enjoyment, I allow myself to relax and indulge in less healthy food occasionally.
However, I can only do that sometimes if I want great results.
It’s a balancing act.
And I know which direction I need to steer listening to my body.
Establish a Strong Habit
To create a lasting habit, you must continuously do it for an adequate amount of time.
The first step is to gain knowledge through learning from others who have the results you want.
Then comes the most difficult step – implementing them into your life.
Once you start moving, momentum will be on your side.
And when you are on a roll, you’ll be an unstoppable force.
Soon, doing that activity becomes second nature, and eventually not performing that task will feel strange.
It is all that dedicated time and effort that allows you to rewire your brain for new habits while eradicating old ones.
Mastery Through Daily Practice
To have complete mastery of yourself is to able to choose your highest desires and values over lesser ones in any given situation.
And to reach that requires daily practice on mastering your character.
It is being in a complete embodiment of your core values which is second nature through years of committed experience.
It is a subconscious behavior, similar to breathing.
Although a committed and at times unconscious habit, it’s critical to focus on improvement.
Just like in yoga, the term practice has the intention to improve.
It’s not simply going through the motions, but having the focus on enhancing each pose to your body’s current capability.
And in exercise, even maintenance is a form of betterment when you are fighting against the inevitable age increase.
Closing Thoughts
To be masterful of yourself requires tiny actions and habits regularly.
And the desire to grow and become better at your craft is what enables you to continuously break through and reach new heights.
As with anything, there will always be room for improvement.
However, who you are currently is always enough and whole. And striving to be better out of love is what makes you amazing.
And following through on your highest values and loving desires with consistent action, then you’ve already arrived.
