Stop Seeking What You Already Have: The Zen Secret to True Peace and Value

“We cannot attain what we already have.”

― Alan Watts

Experience True Peace

In December 2025, I traveled to Caye Caulker, Belize, for a solo trip. One of the main objectives was to practice my regular self-reflection. While sitting on the beach looking out into the Caribbean sea, I scanned my life as a whole.

During my deep dive into every aspect of my life, I journaled the thoughts and ideas that arose. When I transitioned to wealth, I immediately noticed that I wanted more money and financial stability. Then I caught myself, realizing that’s not what I truly desired. Rather, it’s the idea that I would be okay with having all the basic survival needs met.

What I deeply wanted was peace.

And in that moment, it reminded me of a Zen parable that I once heard.

A man approached a Zen master asking for a job.

The Zen master replied, “I’ll give you a job, but you can’t have any money. I’m not going to pay you. What do you really want? What do you really need?”

The man said, “I need the money.”

The master replied, “I’ll give you the money, but you can’t spend it. What do you really want? What do you really need?”

The man said, “I need the money to buy some food. I guess food is what I really need.”

The master replied, “I’ll give you some food, but you can’t eat it. What do you really need? What do you really want?”

The man said, “I need the food because if I can just finally eat, and I can have this job, and I can have the money. I can finally relax, and then I’ll know that I’m okay. I’ll feel safe. I’ll finally be at peace.”

The master replied, “Yes, that’s what you really need and want. It’s that feeling that you’re okay and that you’re at peace. Unfortunately, I can’t give that to you because you’ve already got it.”

The man was puzzled and asked, “How can I have peace if I’m struggling, anxious, and without means?”

The master smiled. “Peace is not something to be given or earned. It is not a thing to be found outside yourself. You are already in it—right now. Your search for peace is the very thing that keeps you from seeing it. When you stop seeking, when you stop needing to have peace, then you realize you’ve always been it.”

This parable reminded me that peace is not something to attain—it is the natural state of being. It is my decision in choosing to be in it, rather than seeking it externally.

Self Improvement vs. Personal Development

There’s a difference between self-improvement and personal development.

You can’t improve the self because the self is already whole and complete.

Take an acorn, for example, it is not an adequate oak. It is a seed of an oak that is ready to grow into an oak with the proper nutrients.

Just as you are, a human being, equipped to grow into your best with the necessary training and guidance. And that’s where personal development comes in.

And as you go through life, you’ll discover more of yourself, which could lead to various interests and expressions.

And through doing and gaining life experience, you develop the necessary skills and knowledge to fulfill your desires and destiny.

Your character gets shaped by your unique experiences.

Become a Man of Value

To get what you want, you must become the man who deserves those things.

Ask yourself:

“Who do I need to be in order to get what I want?”

By being a man of value, you provide value to those around you. Others will gladly reciprocate when they benefit from your actions and deeds.

In business, they willingly pay you money for your services.

When you operate from a place of giving, you’ll be able to create win-win situations by helping others.

By constantly asking yourself:

How can I add value here?”

You’ll be prompted to create solutions that others are eager to have. And when you can help others solve their immediate problems, you will be reciprocally rewarded.

Closing Thoughts

Ultimately, we are all seeking one thing: a deeper connection with something that makes us feel peaceful, joyful, valuable, and alive.

It’s an inner journey that we have with ourselves.

To find true peace, we must let go of searching for it externally and come to full acceptance of what is.

By doing your best and enjoying the journey, you’ve already arrived.

Inner peace is here when you allow it to be.
